Can multiple SKUs share a BOM?
Here's a guide for understanding how BOMs are reused across products.
Yes—DigitBridge allows multiple SKUs to share the same Bill of Materials (BOM), even though each BOM record is officially tied to a single finished goods SKU. This flexible structure makes it easy to manage groups of similar products that follow the same manufacturing process.
How BOM Assignment Works
When you create a BOM, you assign one SKU in the Finished Goods tab. This SKU serves as the representative product for the BOM. However, the manufacturing system treats this BOM as reusable.
In WIP Jobs, you can assign that same BOM to other SKUs that meet the following criteria:
-
The alternate SKUs share the same production process
-
They use the same raw materials and intermediate steps
-
They are only differentiated by minor product details (e.g., size, color, engraving)
Example
Let’s say you produce a ring in three sizes: small, medium, and large. If the process and materials are identical, you can:
-
Create a BOM using one of the SKUs (e.g., RING-MEDIUM)
-
In your WIP job, assign that BOM to all three SKUs (small, medium, large)
-
Track production of each size separately without needing three unique BOMs
Why This Matters
-
Efficiency: You don’t need to duplicate identical process definitions
-
Accuracy: Updates to the shared BOM automatically apply to all SKUs using it
-
Traceability: WIP records still show which SKU was produced
Tip: If a SKU needs a slightly different process or raw material, consider creating a separate BOM or exploring Semi-SKUs for process branching.
