What is the difference between a Customer Type and a Business Type?

Here’s a breakdown of how these two classifications are used in DigitBridge—and why it’s helpful to understand both.

In DigitBridge, Customer Type and Business Type are two different ways of categorizing your customers—but they serve distinct purposes.

  • Customer Type is a fixed system designation used to define what kind of customer you're working with (e.g., Wholesale, Retail, E-commerce, Marketplace, etc.). These categories impact how customers interact with your system and are often tied to fulfillment, channel mapping, and platform integrations. You cannot create or modify customer types.

  • Business Type, on the other hand, is fully customizable. These are internal labels you create and assign to customers based on how you want to segment them. Common use cases include:

    • Assigning unique pricing rules or discount structures

    • Filtering for specific customer groups in reports

    • Tagging customers based on sales strategy, region, or size

Think of Customer Type as what the customer is (based on how they buy), and Business Type as how you treat or think about that customer internally.
